"Scratch Stones" are plain fieldstones upon which someone has seemingly "scratched" in letters or dates. Sometimes other details are noted and in a few cases a rough drawing may be scored upon the stone. More often than not, these are difficult to read due to backwards letters & numbers, mis-spelled words, and use of initials - not to mention 100 years or more of weathering and wear. Additionally the "maker" often didn't allow for spacing, etc..and the end result is a jumble for one to cipher.

The above tombstone can be confusing. Correctly read it notes:
Be Moo...b Ap 1861...age 28 ...di...Ja 19 1889.
Moo may be Moore or Moon as both families were in this area.
