BITS'N'PIECES is a page I scrabbled together by searching out 3 books for mostly bottle-related info, but also, I included some "pieces" about Mills and Iron Works/Foundries in the Abingdon area. The source books were Places In Time  Volumes I, II, & III , written by Nancy C. King.

pre 1782 - William Dryden's Tavern
1783 - Abingdon consisted of 4 log buildings, 3 of which were taverns and the remaining one was the courthouse.
1783-85 - William Bagnall Tavern
1787 - Jane Smith, widow of Dr. Alexander Smith, operated a Tavern on Main Street.
1788 - The Tavern
1797 - The Black Horse Tavern, Samuel Baldwin,proprietor
1797-1812 - John McCormick Tavern

1800-1820 -  - Michael Shaver operated a Tavern
by 1810 - Rufus Soule Tavern operating, sold in 1837
1812 - fire destroyed an ice house
1835 - Thomas Findlay, Proprietor of The Washington House
pre-1838 - Col. James White had an iron furnace
1840s - William M. Grim of Abingdon, manager of The Holston Springs Resort in Scott County,VA. The resort reportedly had mineral waters with medicinal properties.
1846 - Dunn's Hotel > the Virginia House in 1853 > Price's Hotel after 1859 > Frank Findlay purchased and renamed it The Arlington House in 1879. (David Lewark was the bar keeper at The Virginia House.)
1850s - Adam Hickman grist mill at the mouth of Wolf Creek
1850s - James Fields had a brick kiln & factory
1851-1866 - Dr. James A. Dunn established his first Drug Store, and he built another in 1856. In 1866 he moved to Tx.
1853 - The Rose Brothers established a sawmill and cabinet shop.
1857 - Hiram S. Dooley purchased Clapp's Mill & Factory
1859 - William Fields' Central Hotel > The Railroad House in 1866 >The Depot Hotel in 1882
1862 - John G. Clark operating a Foundry
1866-1891 - Dr. R.M. Hickman operated a Druggist and Apothecary Shop. By 1891, he had relocated to Meadowview, Va. A saloon then operated in the building until 1906.
1870s - Ben C. Clark iron foundry
1870s - Dr. H.Roy Smith Drug Store

1871-86 - F.T. Midler owned Abingdon Bakery, where he also served lagers & ales.
1872 - Seven Springs Iron & Alum Mass Company - George Victor Litchfield
- to late 1800s - Paul Carrington Landrum operated a Drug Store  for "Fancy Goods & Patent Medicines". Was also involved with G.V. Litchfield in the Seven Springs Iron & Alum Mass Company.
by 1872 - Thomas McConnell completed construction of the Colonnade Hotel. From 1876-1913 it was owned by Minter Jackson and it's Proprietors were James C. Campbell & James A. Armistead in 1877, I.F. Jones in 1878, and Charles Harris in 1896.
1873 - I.F. (Frank) Jones est. a sawmill on Water Street. By the 1890s Col.A.F. Cook & J.Leach Gilpin were using it to make wagons.
1875 - Frank S. Findlay Drug Store occ. for a short time by Dr.R.M. Hickman
after 1878 - S.G. Keller operated "The Old Reliable Whiskey House", which contained a Billiard Room operated by J.E. Deaton. In 1887 - A.B. Keller established a restaurant in the building.
1879 - Frank Findlay sawmill on creek
1879 - F.B Brownlow  built a home facing Court Street. Brownlow later became a saloon owner.
1879-1901 - The Planters Hotel built by Capt. John Broyles and his brother-in-law, Charles E. Jones.
1880s - Dr. W.W. Gold Drug Store
1883-1891 - F.B. & S.F. Hurt and A.M. Bradley construct the later known Bradley Building, which contained a saloon.
1885 - Hattie House Hotel built.
1886 - L.J. Neidermeier Soda Fountain
1887 - The  Eureka Hotel was owned by Hop Scott. Ben T. Clark opened a saloon within and called it," The Cave City Saloon." In 1891, the hotel was renamed The Belmont.

1901 - West End Pharmacy, previously known as Dr. Gold's Drug Store (1880s), was originally owned by C.G. Gibson in 1866, purchased by Dr. Charles H. Jennings in 1894 and sold to Dr. G.F. Grant  and C.W. Mason in 1909. By 1916 W.A. Maiden owned the business and it was known as Maiden's Drug Store for many years afterwards
1904 - Smith B.Cubine operated both the West End and Up Town Pool Rooms.
by 1906 - R.A. Hines& Son Drug Store
1906 - R.C. Copenhaver was the  manager of the Bromine-Arsenic Springs Hotel *(located where?).
1906 - The Abingdon Dispensary System was established, thus saloons were closed. The Dispensary became the sole ( legal),source of alcoholic beverages in the town. 
1908 - Hattie House Hotel became the Abingdon Hotel and was owned by W.F. Robertson, D.A. Preston, and J.W. Bell.
The former bar room now sold soft drinks.
by 1910 - Dr. George Grant Proprietor of Abingdon Pharmacy
1910 - The Dagmar Hotel ,owner L.P. Summers
1917 - The Abingdon Creamery & Ice Company opened. Became Husband's Creamery in 1920, and Southern Creamery after 1931.
1923 - Peoples Drug Store moved into the old Citizens Bank building
1924 - The College Inn operating as a short order business, with fountain services.
by 1928 - J.T. Hagy Ice Factory
