Exploring the "Star" House & Mill

June 2009 and I have located another former mill site. For privacy purposes I will not give its name nor exact location, but will note it is in Washington County,VA. It isn't known when this mill operated but the mill owner's house looks to have been constructed before 1900. And this house is not typical of any I have noted in the area before.
As I walked down through the rock strewn field I could see the roof of the house through the trees far below. The closer I got, the more obvious it was that the property owner was doing some restoration work. When I stood in front of the house I was awed by the architectural "designs". Upon one eastward facing gable was a 6 pointed star and ,upon another gable facing north ,was a 5 pointed star. These stars were used as "good luck" symbols and are Germanic in their origins. A porch had been built along the entire front, which is common enough, but hanging beneathe the porch roof were curved wooden arches decorated with many wooden balls.
To the westerly side of the house, remnants of the partially rock-lined mill pond could be seen, as well as the raceway ,and the piers at the sluice where the millwheel had once been erected. The race had been hand dug quite some distance alongside the creek and lined with rock. Down in the creek bed near the sluice partial foundations and piers could still be seen.
The owner told me his Grandfather had built and operated the mill. Upon the upper end of the race had been a gate, which could be opened to allow water to flow down the race and into the pond, thus driving the wheel as it flowed on outward through the sluiceway.
As a "boon" , I discovered the barn on the site had been constructed around a much earlier log barn.
